<image:title>going going gone - Going Going Gone</image:title>
<image:caption>Going Going Gone Is a collective work of art about Oregon’s biodiversity. Seventy artists finished 160 plaques, which were displayed along with 140 unfinished ones, to mark the extent of ecological disruption in the state. Each plaque portrays a species of imperiled plant, color-coded to indicate the plant’s ecological status: black-and-white plaques represent extinct plants, red ones are endangered, and multicolored ones (as well as the gray-and-black ones, as yet unfinished) indicate threatened species. The plaques were shown at three Portland venues, where a large and varied audience (estimated at 6,000 to 9,000) passed through. The installations elicited an immediate response of “That many!” (in amazement at the large number of threatened, endangered and extinct plants in Oregon) and inspired many conversations. 1994 Organizers: Hugo Anaya & Rachel Hibbard Local support for this project included: Cascadia Forest Alliance, Portland Nursery & Mahaffey Fine Art</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a life size chart; the yellow lines mark projected sea rise over the next 50 to 100 years. (studio view) The associative links between the materials employed to carry these statistics are important (satellite photographs, rubber inner- tubes, electrical tape, glass, water, seeds) each of these things come from systems: natural, industrial and astronomical. When the viewer allows these associations to start forming, the work will be completed. It is in this flow between individual histories and the physical nature of the materials themselves that the work coalesces. *Postcard invitation to “reduce dependence on fossil fuel” with tear-off badges made collaboratively with Jody Dunphy</image:caption>

<image:caption>This body of work is based on my collection of evolutionary and Buddhist cosmological charts. I am interested by the astounding ways these charts compress information and their use of both organic and geometric forms. The act of painting, the scale and slight irregularity of each panel, the gesso I make — are all linked for me. The way forms are built out of the paint has a logic that cascades out of each previous decision. This makes painting a slow procedure; I let the brush strokes accumulate like coral reefs, anchored to their thematic starting points but growing organically out of a struggle with intervening ideas. I relate this way of working to how we are in the world we continually construct our physical and social selves.</image:caption>

<image:title>Bins - Bins Collaborative</image:title>
<image:caption>Rachel Hibbard, Sean Regan, Cara Tomlinson The Bins (aka the Goodwill Outlet Store in Portland, Ore.) is a sorting station that transfers goods from one state to another, from one owner to another, and from one purpose to another. It is the final stop before landfill, materials salvage or last-chance purchase. This installation was one of several projects looking at this redistribution and disposal of consumer goods. As if you are in a casino time in the Bins seems to continually renew itself: there is always the next bin, the next mass of objects, the next jackpot — each with thing carrying its own history. Stuff is in the process of transforming from useful to trash, from new to obsolete, or from trash to re-useful. The Bins are a reckoning; the skeletons of consumption are accumulating. In this one outlet store alone, 80,000 lbs. of material pass through each day. We have been regular customers of the Bins for over 15 years. The space brings together America’s vast consumer economy of excess with the tradition of frugality in a startling mix. Oregon’s Immigrant population, Portland natives, micro businesses, obsessive collectors, people who have made the choice to live lower down on the consumer chain, and those who just need inexpensive stuff all churn the same heaps side by side. The abundance of resources grows community just as nutrient soil enriches plant life: the Bins creates unusual economies and social networks, mirroring the processes of bio-systems. In this second incarnation we use five monitors around the space that highlight the processing of the mass of objects as well as many material aspects of the Bins: the back-room recycling and salvage operation, and the confrontation with the overwhelming abundance and variety of the things in the bins themselves. All materials used in the installation are borrowed from the Bins and will be returned to the cycle after the installation is over. The greater its height grows, the more the danger of a landslide looms: a tin can, an old tire, an unraveled wine flask, if it rolls toward Leonia, is enough to bring with it an avalanche of unmated shoes, calendars of bygone years, withered flowers, submerging the city in its own past, which it had tried in vain to reject, mingling with the past of the neighboring cities, finally clean. A cataclysm will flatten the sordid mountain range, canceling every trace of the metropolis always dressed in new clothes. In the nearby cities they are all ready, waiting with bulldozers to flatten the terrain, to push into the new territory, expand, and drive the new street cleaners still farther out. Excerpt: Italo Calvino, “Leonia,” Invisible Cities, 1970.</image:caption>

Video: digital video A three-year exploration of the Bins (a Goodwill outlet store where goods are sold by the pound), its community and “trickle-down” economies. This project grew out of more than a decade of shopping experiences fellow artists Sean Regan, Cara Tomlinson and I have had at this storied Portland institution. <image:caption>white, Hall 142 " x 107" Collage, shellac, ink, oil paint, photo-copies, offset on glassine and on book pages A panoramic collage,* the series refers to the Gregorian calendar, but my calendar is not seasonal. It is a progression of days that clump into (monthesques) and advance through a spectrum of colors. In each grouping, imagery combines into visual constellations with recurrent images acting as refrains. Each month/monthesque, is named for a common object. The days' names are common actions. If one was to use this system in speech it would sound like…Paying the 2nd of Chair or Getting the 14th of Spoon. Months: 1.Chair; 2.Plane; 3.TV; 4.Spoon; 5.Table; 6.Car; 7.Hall; 8.Heater; 9.Boat; 10.Refrigerator; 11.Pants; 12.Bed. Days: Paying; Watching; Filling; Putting; Getting; Moving and Laying; Materials:* It is important to me that I am not adding many more things to the world. Each page has existed in a book, I overlay and reconfigure them, very much as an editor might have done before me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Remixing geographies of home and the frontline, images from the news project the dark matter of the American Dream back into domestic space. This work stands between the spheres of war reenactment, photojournalism, and surrealist collage. Each image reconstitutes an individual’s face, the direction of a gun, or a gaze, a place. I am searching for a way to carry events into the present and dump them at the viewer’s feet. I am indebted to the artist, Martha Rosler and generations of photojournalists whose work I am not so much appropriating as acknowledging as a powerful constituent of the world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impossible Objects - Impossible Objects</image:title>
<image:caption>These drawings build on a tradition of graphic inquiry optical illusions, their inconstant perspectives call our awareness to the act of interpretation itself. The work plays with the possibility that all space- public-private, inner-outer, natural-synthetic etc. – is a continuum, made as it is occupied, in either thought or form. The plane is a good place to explore dimensionality. As the delicate paper is distorted by paint and grows the worse for wear the paper becomes an object in its own right, taking my ideas for a ride. On it, this recursive, irrational survey of cubic forms has emerged, phasing between dimensions signaling the surprising potentials of each juncture.
